CCSN Women's Softball Team Gearing Up for Upcoming Season
by Hank Wachamakallet
With the inaugural season for the new CCSN softball program fast approaching, head coach Richard Grenell is working hard to make the first season of the program a successful one.
The CCSN softball program was introduced when Athletic Director Tim Chambers had to disband men's and women's basketball after only one season due to lack of funding and support. To coincide with the CCSN baseball team, softball was introduced as the second sport to the CCSN athletic program.
Coach Grenell has already compiled an up and coming team; most are Nevada natives, and six are Las Vegas high school graduates.
"We have 16 players on the team, [and] 14 of 16 have never played at the collegiate level before," said Grenell, "They need to learn that when things go bad, they can go bad very, very quickly."
Assisting Grenell at leadership is pitcher Melissa Lundwall (Silverado High School) and outfielder Krystian James (Cimarron-Memorial).
"Melissa is really stepping up, mostly by example," said Grenell, "James is very vocal and very good at getting the players excited, very excited and competitive."
Although it will be the first season for the softball program at CCSN, Grenell has the same goals as any other coach would have for his team.
"We talk about goals and goals at practice," said Grenell, "simply, we want to go into the SWAC (Scenic West Athletic Conference) Championship round at the end of the season and put ourselves in a good position for the playoffs."
